Summary
This article re-examines why local employees in Vietnam leave their companies. In 2019, one of the authors analyzed survey data and found that an important reason for leaving was not compensation but the fact that the company’s vision and information on decision-making were not shared. This conclusion did not sit well, however, and the two authors re-analyzed the open-ended responses from the same survey. When they filtered stop words out of the texts in which respondents wrote what they wanted regarding policies and regulations and organizational culture, and drew keyword networks, words related to compensation appeared most often and most centrally on the policies and regulations side. The authors surmise that a tendency to choose answers that look socially desirable was at work in the survey. The article therefore recommends doubting analysis results and checking them again with several methods.
Key points
- Even for the same subjects, analysis of survey items and analysis of open-ended text can show different pictures.
- In the responses about policies and regulations, compensation-related words were at the center.
- The responses about organizational culture were similar to the survey results in that respondents wanted information exchange and activities among members.
- It is necessary to define and analyze a problem from several angles with several kinds of data, including qualitative research and text responses as well as surveys.
- Data and analysis are not always objective and right, so results should be regarded as open to change.
