Summary
This paper asks what research on the Korean content industry has dealt with over the past twenty-odd years, with which methods, and at what level. We gathered 416 relevant articles indexed in KCI (2004–2026) through a systematic literature review procedure and classified them by distribution by year, business sub-area, research method, and level of analysis, and we used structural topic modeling (STM) as an aid to check the manual classification.
Research has grown steadily, and articles since 2021 were the most numerous at 146 (35.1%). Sub-areas were concentrated in technological innovation and convergence (51.0%), followed by policy and institutions (21.4%). In method, literature, theory and policy analysis (42.5%) and case and qualitative research (40.9%) made up most of the work, while quantitative empirical research was only 16.6%. Micro-level research on topics such as corporate strategy, revenue structure, creators’ labor, and revenue sharing was relatively scarce, and the STM results largely agreed with this classification. We propose that business models, platforms, revenue sharing, and labor issues need to be treated with more precision in future work.
