Summary
Human Resource Development International (HRDI) is the journal in the field that focuses on HRD in international and cross-cultural contexts. For its 25th year, we were invited by the Editor-in-Chief to review the journal’s body of work. The article was first published online in November 2023.
Four questions guided the review: the structural and compositional characteristics of HRDI research, how research themes have progressed, how refereed and non-refereed articles differ, and how countries contribute and collaborate. The dataset consisted of the metadata of 982 articles published from 1998 to 2022, analysed with bibliometrics and topic modelling.
The study describes the landscape of the journal and underlines its role for HRD research and practice in global and cross-cultural settings. It also identifies shifts in research themes over time, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. A methodological lesson is that domain expertise has to be brought in at every step of text analytics for the results to be precise and meaningfully interpreted.
