Summary

How do gendered morality and positivity shape social entrepreneurship during global crises? This study examines the interplay between morality-as-cooperation and positive psychological capital (PsyCap), and how both relate to social entrepreneurial intention in turbulent times.

We gathered survey data from undergraduate business students at an American university in China over six years, and compared three phases: before, during, and after the pandemic crisis. A trend analysis was used to follow the changes by gender across these phases.

At the start, male students showed higher levels of PsyCap, a difference that gradually levelled off. Female students showed a marked increase in moral standards as the crisis intensified. At the peak of the crisis, an unexpected negative relationship appeared between morality and social entrepreneurial intention among female students, which may reflect contextual factors that dampen the drive to engage under extreme conditions. Across all phases, PsyCap acted as a stabilising mediator linking moral values and social entrepreneurial intention.

Why it matters

The results suggest that social entrepreneurship education should take gender differences into account and strengthen psychological resilience during periods of upheaval.
