Summary
International human resource management (IHRM) has matured as a sub-field of both HRM and international business, but earlier reviews mostly described its structure from a static viewpoint. This paper traces how the field developed over time, and how earlier research themes were carried into later work.
We built a dataset of 1,507 articles published from 1995 to 2019 in journals specialising in IHRM, international business, and general management. The analysis was carried out at the keyword, thematic, and network levels, using keyword network analysis and bibliographic coupling to identify trends and the relatedness of research themes.
The results show that IHRM research has moved through several phases of thematic focus. Early work emphasised cultural differences and expatriate management, while more recent work addresses topics such as global talent management and digital transformation. Earlier themes did not disappear. They continue to be incorporated and placed in new contexts in recent scholarship. The paper also outlines future research trends, drawing on the institutional logic perspective.
