Summary

People analytics has spread quickly in practice, but the academic literature on it is still young and scattered. In this article, written for a special issue on people analytics, we asked what the research landscape looks like when it is read from a human resource development (HRD) point of view, and where HRD scholars could contribute.

We followed a scoping review procedure and used the Web of Science as the data source. The search identified 173 articles, and 159 documents entered the topic model. We then compared two computational views of the same literature: the topics and grouped themes from topic modeling, and the clusters produced by bibliographic coupling.

The two views pointed to the same areas of concentration: workforce planning and management, data-informed decision-making, the application of analytics to individual HR functions, and the ethical and societal implications of analysing people data. Against this map, we describe where HRD questions are still thinly covered and outline directions for future work.

Why it matters

The paper gives HRD researchers a structured starting point for people analytics work, and shows that two independent text-analytic methods converge on the same core themes.
