Summary

This is a conceptual paper that starts from the question of how the irrational and sometimes destructive behavior of leaders can be explained, and reviews what psychodynamics can add to leadership research. Psychodynamics assumes that a person’s behavior is partly influenced by the unconscious and defense mechanisms formed in the past.

It is a theoretical review based on the literature, not a study that analyses empirical data. We first distinguished psychoanalysis from psychodynamics and connected the arguments of psychodynamic theorists to leadership research. We then discussed the implications of three concepts, the unconscious, defense mechanisms, and transference, for leadership development and coaching, leadership derailment and abusive supervision, and research on executives in Korea.

The contribution of this paper is that it introduces an approach that has not received much attention in Korean leadership scholarship and proposes concretely the topics and methods that can be studied from this perspective.
