Summary
Multinational corporations need to retain their local employees, and that is difficult. This study asks whether organizational commitment explains how perceived career growth opportunity relates to turnover intention among local staff.
We analyzed survey responses from employees of five companies in Vietnam affiliated with a Korean multinational corporation (n = 142 after one outlier was removed). The mediation model was tested with regression and 5,000 bootstrap samples, an approach suited to a small sample.
Organizational commitment was a partial mediator. Employees who saw more career growth opportunity reported higher commitment, and higher commitment went with lower turnover intention. Career growth opportunity also remained negatively related to turnover intention after commitment was included in the regression model. For multinationals, the result points to career growth opportunity as something that relates to retention of local employees both directly and through commitment.
