Summary
We asked what corporate employees in Korea think career success is, and how that perception differs by individual characteristics. The aim was to find the several dimensions of career success perception in text written by the employees themselves.
We collected thoughts on career success from 126 corporate employees through an open-ended survey and applied LDA topic modeling in R. Five topics emerged: working at a socially recognized workplace (social recognition); being faithful to one’s assigned work and enduring within the organization (tenure within the organization); having knowledge and know-how in one’s own field (expertise); obtaining rewards and results in proportion to one’s work (economic reward); and finding fulfillment and a sense of achievement in work (pursuit of personal meaning). The proportion in which each topic appeared differed by gender, age, and education level.
The study confirmed that career success perception consists of several dimensions, and showed that topic modeling can be used to analyse unstructured data such as open-ended survey responses. It was published in 2019.
