Overview

This is the teaching methods special lecture (workshop) for the first semester of the 2020 academic year at Sangji University, which I gave on April 1, 2020. The subject was how to run live classes with the video conferencing solution Zoom. It did not stop at introducing the tool: it showed, in order, what to check before class and the features used during class, and it closed with a practice session in which participants connected themselves. The later part of the slides contains a short sample class titled “소셜네트워크 분석 101” [Social Network Analysis 101].

Contents

  • Introduction to Zoom, with its strengths and weaknesses: video and audio, collaboration tools, scheduling, chat, and recording. The strengths are a simple installation and joining with nothing more than a link; the weaknesses are the time limit on free use and the need to keep attendance records separately.
  • What to prepare and what to check before starting: device, webcam, microphone, speakers, and internet connection. Checking that the camera and audio work.
  • Workflow and the main app menu: home, chat, meetings, contacts, starting a new meeting, scheduling, and joining.
  • Meeting app features: audio and video settings and tests, inviting learners, managing participants, polls, screen sharing, chat, recording, captions, and small-group (breakout) meetings.
  • Precautions: managing links and passwords, preventing audio feedback, and announcing rules before class.
  • Demonstration and practice.
  • Sample class “소셜네트워크 분석 101” [Social Network Analysis 101]: opening announcements, explanation of concepts, video, group discussion, a poll, and questions and answers.

Tools and materials

  • The Zoom main app and meeting app.
  • A 50-slide deck.
  • A Zoom meeting for practice.
