Overview

This is a workshop I gave at Sangmyung University in 2017. The date on the slides is July 1, 2017. It introduced open-source tools that can be used in research and was organized in three parts so that participants could carry out social network analysis and bibliometric analysis with those tools themselves. The archived materials are the Part I and Part III slides; the structure of Part II is given in the learning guide in Part I.

Contents

  • Part I. Open-source research tools and social network analysis: the background and advantages of R and RStudio, the package system, and where to find R resources. Gephi, a tool for network analysis and visualization; VOSviewer, which visualizes bibliographic information; and GitHub, used for collaboration and version control. Participants then install the software and learn the basics of R.
  • Part II. Social network analysis with R: basic concepts and data structures, followed by analysis techniques that run from visualization and network indicators to QAP and MRQAP, and ERGM.
  • Part III. Bibliometrics: the meaning of bibliometrics and scientometrics, keyword networks, co-citation networks, bibliographic coupling, and the difference between co-citation and bibliographic coupling. In the final exercise, participants collect bibliographic data by keyword and visualize it.

Tools and materials

  • R and RStudio.
  • Gephi.
  • VOSviewer.
  • GitHub.
  • Web of Science bibliographic data.
  • Part I (20 slides) and Part III (9 slides) slide decks built with R Markdown.
