Overview
I joined the AHRD HRD Masterclass Podcast as an invited panelist for Season 3, Episode 5, “HRD & Data Analytics.” The episode was hosted by Dr. Darren Short, and I spoke alongside Dr. Claire Gubbins and Dr. Peter Gray. It was released on August 30, 2022.
Key points
The conversation followed a set of questions that moved from definitions to practice.
- What data analytics means. We started with how data analytics is defined and how the understanding of the term differs around the world. In my preparation I compared neighbouring labels such as HR analytics, people analytics, and workforce analytics, and connected them to computational social science.
- Analytics and the workplace. The panel discussed how data analytics relates to work and the workplace, and how that relationship has changed over the years.
- Analytics and HRD. We talked about how research, theory, and practice in each field influence the other.
- Challenges ahead. One example was helping employees learn from each other when they work remotely or in hybrid forms, and what an analytics approach can add there.
- Practical advice. The questions also covered which existing organizational data HRD can use, how HRD professionals can start learning data analysis, and how to work with data experts already inside the organization.
