Overview

I took part as a panelist in TSW, an online session that KAHRDA runs for HRD researchers and practitioners in Korea and abroad. The theme of this session, held on July 16, 2022 (Korea time), was ‘연구/실무를 위한 HR/People Analytics’. Moderated by Professor 장세빈, I held a panel discussion in question-and-answer form with Professor 윤승원, Professor 이중학, team leader 어승수, and Dr. 이재진, and then took questions from participants.

Key points

The discussion proceeded in the order of the definition of HR/People Analytics, research trends, application in the field, and outlook. I prepared the parts on definition and research trends.

  • Clarifying terms: I compared the definitions of HR Analytics, People Analytics, Talent Analytics, and Workforce Analytics across previous studies, and drew out the common elements of decision making, data, and modeling.
  • Why it matters: I explained it in terms of the growing volume and complexity of the data to be handled and the demand for accuracy, objectivity, reliability, and economy of results.
  • Limits of analysis: I also pointed out that analytic techniques alone cannot solve an organization’s problems.
  • Advice for practitioners: I recommended separating raw data from reporting data, keeping a record of changes, and making corrections with code instead of by hand. I suggested letting go of the fear that only complex analysis counts as People Analytics, and starting with collecting, storing, and retrieving data consistently.
