Overview
Programmatic assessment has gained attention in medical education because it draws on many data collection points, combines formative feedback with summative assessment, and builds mentoring into the assessment process. The literature, however, tends to offer lists of strategies or guiding principles and says less about how the parts of such a system connect.
This poster, led by Boyung Suh, reviews that literature and proposes a conceptual framework that shows the flow and relationships among the key elements of an effective programmatic assessment system. It is a conceptual piece and reports no empirical data.
Key points
- The model places a programmatic assessment cycle at the center: collaborative planning, communication and negotiation, implementation, performance evaluation, and quality improvement.
- Environmental factors and institutional capacity, including the assessment strategy and the organization’s capacity for change, feed into the cycle.
- Support activities are organizational change management and continuous organization development.
- Outcomes are described at three levels: learners, educators, and organization and culture.
- The framework is meant to help educators and managers of medical training institutions who are introducing a complex assessment system.
