Overview
In 2016 I gave a series of lectures and workshops at Universidad ECCI in Bogotá, Colombia, for faculty, researchers, graduate students, and practitioners. The session outlines I prepared cover three hands-on workshops built on open-source tools, each planned for 10 to 30 participants working on their own laptops.
Key points
- R Bootcamp (three hours): an introduction to R and RStudio, basic operations and data types, a data analysis walk-through from descriptive statistics to regression and factor analysis, and a final module on reproducibility and documentation with R Markdown.
- Social network analysis (two hours): network theories and the whole-network and ego-centric approaches, research and survey design for network studies (social influence and social selection), then a demonstration with R and Gephi on network data structures, basic analysis, visualization, and reporting.
- Bibliometric analysis (two hours): scholarly impact and the main bibliometric networks (co-authorship, keyword co-occurrence, co-citation), searching Web of Science and Scopus, and practice with VOSviewer and Gephi.
- All three sessions were written for beginners and aimed at lowering the barrier to script-based analysis and to network methods in organizational research and practice.
