What students learn

This is the entry course of the Business Analytics program. It shows how continuous, iterative analysis of past business performance supports decisions across business domains, and it gives students the skills and techniques they need for the rest of the program. Students look at the applications of business analytics, business intelligence, data mining, and big data from a managerial perspective.

Topics

From the Fall 2021 syllabus:

  • Applications of business analytics, business intelligence, data mining, and big data
  • Chapter readings and summaries based on Sharda, Delen, and Turban, Business Intelligence, Analytics, and Data Science: A Managerial Perspective (4th ed.)
  • Lab sessions: demonstration and practice in class, followed by a lab assignment
  • Online discussion on each unit
  • A team final project in which students choose the subject, data, and method, and deliver a reproducible report with code, data, a short promotion video, and a poster
  • A poster session for the Business Analytics program at the end of the term
  • Midterm and final exams

R, Python, Tableau. The final report can be written as an R Markdown document, a Python Jupyter notebook, or a Tableau-generated web document.
