What it was

A one-day bootcamp I taught on Saturday, November 27, 2021, at Wenzhou-Kean University (CBPM A102). It was the first session of the Wenzhou-Kean University Data Analysis Bootcamp Series, organized by the WKU Library, on library databases and data analysis. The series was aimed at undergraduate students, including those working on senior theses or early-stage research ideas. Participants brought their own laptops, and three undergraduate teaching assistants supported the session.

Contents

The programme for the day:

  • Opening speech from the library
  • Basics of R and generating reports with R Markdown (morning): a first R script and a first report, covering data loading, summary statistics, histograms, correlation tables and plots, a simple regression, and prediction from the fitted model
  • Basics of social network analysis (afternoon): what a social network is, what questions network analysis can answer, and how networks are expressed as data; building a network from relational data; network-level measures such as density, diameter, average path length, centralization, and clustering coefficient; node-level measures such as degree, betweenness, and closeness centrality; ego-centric networks; plotting networks
  • Tour of the Digital Scholarship Center

Materials

  • Slides: “Bootcamp R: Basic Social Network Analysis and Dynamic Reporting with R” (PDF, built with R Markdown)
  • R source code for the session, using the igraph and visNetwork packages
  • A bookdown site for the bootcamp series with the programme and requirements
